The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo opened in June 1989 as Zooland Animal Park. The zoo was founded as a private enterprise by Joey Ward of Gulf Shores. In 1991, the Ward family created the Zoo Foundation, Inc., a non-profit corporation, and donated the 17 acres of prime real estate that makes up the zoo today. Three years later, the Ward family and the Erie Meyer Foundation graciously donated an additional 13 acres, which are still undeveloped.

Fort Morgan

Fort Morgan has been standing sentry at the mouth of Mobile bay for 180 years. Built after the war of 1812, the fort was designed to protect the shipping channels of Mobile Bay and the port of Mobile. It was 30 years before the fort had to defend the mouth of the bay. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., CST, except for the award winning “Tuesday Twilight Tours” in June and July, when visitors can learn about the life at the Fort with — rifle demonstrations, the responsibilities of the Laundress, and cannon firing!

National Museum of Naval Aviation

Beginning at the bridge over Perdido Pass, the Gulf Shores-Orange Beach Loop of the Alabama Coasting Birding Trail presents a perfect opportunity to see the stunning avian wildlife that resides along the Gulf Coast. The east section of Alabama point has several varieties of loons and waterfowl. The west section has seabirds and fishing on the rocks. Boggy Point gives you a view of Robinson Island, a roosting site for herons and egrets.The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, part of Gulf State Park, has one of the last remaining intact maritime forests along coastal Alabama.
